Portrait of Alfred Stieglitz with Inscription
Print Notes
This photograph comes originally from the collection of Beaumont Newhall (1908-1993), the first curator of the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art. He met Alfred Stieglitz in the early 1930s at Stieglitz’s “An American Place” gallery, a mecca for aspiring artists, photographers, and collectors from its opening in 1929 until its close in 1950. Ansel Adams had a landmark exhibition of his photographs at “An American Place” in 1936, and it was in the gallery that the present photograph was taken.
